Ayurveda can play a crucial role in preventing and controlling diabetes.
Let’s see what causes diabetes
Diabetes is referred as diabetes mellitus by doctors. It is a health condition that arises due to the low insulin level in body.
Low insulin levels in body can either be due to the decreased insulin production in body or because body’s cells do not respond properly to the insulin it produces.
When this happens, body won’t be able to carry the sugar in our blood to the cells. As a result the blood sugar levels increases.
Increased blood sugar levels will cause many issues in our body.
Some of the most common symptoms of diabetes are,
- Tendency for frequent urination (polyuria)
- Becoming increasingly thirsty (polydipsia)
- Becoming increasingly hungry (polyphagia)
- Getting easily tired, fatigue
- Dry and itchy skin
- Blurred vision
- Wounds taking much time to heal
Different types of diabetes
There are 3 different type of diabetes based on the causes that led to the rise in blood sugar level.
The 3 different type of diabetes are,
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes
- Gestational diabetes
Let’s learn more about each type of these diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes
Cause of type 1 daibetes
Type 1 diabetes is considered as an auto immune condition. The pancreas in our body produces the insulin, type 1 diabetes occurs when our
immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the beta cell in pancreas that produces insulin.
People often develop type 1 diabetes before the age of 40. Only about 10% of diabetes are type 1.
People with type 1 diabetes often have to take insulin injections for the rest of the lives. They will also need to take regular blood test to keep the blood glucose level in check.
Type 2 diabetes
Cause of type 2 daibetes
Type 2 diabetes is caused due to the body’s inefficiency to use the insulin produced by the pancreas.
As a result the pancreas is forced to produce more insulin to keep up with the demand, until the point where insulin production gradually decreases. This increases the blood sugar level.
The exact cause of body’s inability to use insulin is not known. However the most contributing factors could be genetics, lack of exercise and being overweight.
Overweight and obese people have a high chance of getting type 2 diabetes compared to people with balanced body weight. The risk of getting type 2 diabetes also increases with age.
This type diabetes only affects females during the time of pregnancy. Insulin blocking hormones produced during pregnancy is considered as the cause of gestational diabetes. As a result cells receive less insulin and blood sugar level rises.
Most patients having gestational diabetes can control the diabetes with just proper exercise and diet. Only 10% – 20% of them need to take any kind of medication.
Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes
Madhumeha is a vata disorder (condition caused by aggravation of vata dosha) .
Vata symbolises wind and dryness in ayurveda. Maximum deterioration of body tissues occurs in vata disorder and this is the reason why diabetes affects vital organs.
Ayurveda sees impaired digestion as the root cause behind diabetes. As a result the digestive impurities accumulates in pancreas and impares the production of insulin.
Ayurveda sees diabetes as a major disease due to the fact that if not treated in time, it can transform into a verity of diseases affecting our vital organs like eye problems, joint pains, impotence, kidney failure, urological and sexual problems etc…
Diet and lifestyle changes
Ayurveda does not only deal with diet and medication to cure diabetes, but also with changing the entire life style of patient.
- Skip daytime sleeping
- Quit smoking
- Get more physical activity
- Exercise – word of the hour
- Eat plenty of fiber rich foods
Ayurveda treatments for diabetes flag off with different types of sneha karmas (oilation therapy) to make sure that the body of the patient is properly oilated both externally and internally. The next step is to remove the vitiated doshas out of the body through upper and lower tracts with panchakarma treatments. After the panchakarma treatments the patient is given oral medicines including kashayams, lehyams and choornams.
