Ayurvedic Treatments

Vertebral Column

Ayurveda is the Vedic system of health care that was developed in India over 5000 years ago. As it is a natural therapy it has no side effect or complications. Vertebral column strain is common for Computer professionals. Sitting in front of the computer for10- 12 hours daily can cause undue strain to the Vertebral column.

Although the vertebrae have slightly different appearances as they range from the cervical spine to the lumbar spine, they all have the same basic structures, and the structures have the same names. Only the first and second cervical vertebrae are structurally different in order to support the skull. Each vertebra has an anterior arch and a posterior arch, which forms a hole, called a foramen. The spinal cord passes through foramen of each vertebra.

Herbal medicines like Shudh Kuchla, Ashwagandha, Guggulu, Eranda, Shilajit, Boswelia, Haldi etc., various herbal and Herbomineral compounds are also described in Ayurvedic texts. Yoga Asanas can be performed but only under the Guidance of a qualified consultant.

Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease is one of the most common causes of low back pain due to the degeneration of the vertebral disc. Even though a natural process, these changes can impose pain. This normally affects the Cervical and the Lumbar spine.

One of the common causes for backache is poor posture habit. A balanced posture decreases stress on your back by keeping the muscles, bones and other supporting parts in their natural position. Any change from the normal spinal curve can stress or pull muscles. This leads to increased muscle contractions, which causes pain. Lower back pain can result due to health problems like osteoporosis, scoliosis and spinal stenosis. Sprain or strain of muscles or ligaments in the area can also manifest in low back pain. Lack of exercise or incorrect exercise and too much weight or overweight also is a cause of degenerative disc diseases.

Ayurvedic treatment for Disc Problems chiefly include Abhyangam( A whole body massage with specific herbal oils), Nadi Swedam(medicated steam bath), Elakizhi (herbal leaf bundle massage), Pizhichil (medicated oil bath), Kati Vasthi & Greeva Vasthi( a treatment done on to the back to reduce spinal compression), Vasthi( medicated enema) Virechanam ( purgation) and other Ayurvedic procedures are performed according to the severity.

Bone Degeneration and Loss

To prevent bone degeneration, Ayurveda guides a person to keep their Doshas in balance with an appropriate diet and a vata-pacifying regime. Herbs to facilitate mineral circulation and deposition into the bones are recommended such as ginger, long pepper and cinnamon, provided they are suitable for the body-type. Phytoestogenic herbs like red clover, alfalfa, parsley, sage, aniseed, fennel, sarasparilla, licorice, false unicorn root, ladies slipper, wild yam, peony, black cohosh and passionflower are used to help postmenopausal women to retain minerals. Ayurveda which is based upon the concept of Vaat, Pitta and Kapha humors of the human body, is a holistic therapy. Asthi means bone and kshya is loss. The symptoms are pain in bones, weak nails and teeth, dryness in body, excessive fall of hair, chronic fatigue without any labour and loose joints.

Do not take up exercises in cases of severe inflammation, without consulting your doctor. In acute cases, rest usually heals. The moment inflammation subsides, you will need to start exercising. Too much rest can also make joints immobile and stiff. Consult your doctor to learn about the mode and the type of exercises for it to get cured.

Intervertebral Prolapse

Any disc in the entire spine can prolapse or burst, the most common ones to which this happens are the lowest two, which is between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae and between the fifth lumbar and the top of the sacrum, as the stresses experienced by the spine are the greatest at these levels.

Because the discs themselves have virtually no nerve supply, it is only when a disc prolapses and presses onto a nerve or some other vulnerable part of the spine, the pain will be noticed. The pain of a prolapsed disc tends to be deep, dull and persistent and it may radiate into all sorts of unexpected places. For example, a prolapsed disc in the lower back may produce pain in several places such as the buttocks, hip, groin or legs. Some people find that these pains are worse if they bend in one particular way. Others find that their pains become unbearable if they stand straight. And it isn't uncommon for people to complain that their pain is worse when they sneeze, cough or laugh.

Treatments for damaged disc (Mamsa Bhagna), inflammation reduction (Vathahara), pain reduction (Vedanahara) and recurrence prevention are some of the treatments offered in Ayurveda.

Cervical Spondylosis

Spondylosis is a spinal degeneration or deformity of joints of two or more vertebrae, which occurs with aging. Cervical Spondylosis is a type of Arthritis that affects the cervics and causes pain in the lower neck.

Ayurvedic Treatments usually involves three methods, Elimination (Shodhanam), of the accumulated toxic products of digestion, metabolism and the disease process, Pacification (Shamanam) and correction of the entities responsible for altered functioning and Rejuvenation (Rasayanam) of the bodily tissue to regain and maintain natural strength and vitality. Vata, the principle of movement is the predominant function with the skeleto-muscular system and the nervous system. Problems relating to these systems are predominantly caused by vitiated Vata. The vitiation of vata is caused by two mechanisms. One of them is obstruction to vata due to malfunctioning of kapha and pitta. The other one is increase of vata independently (the degenerative problems).

Lumbar Spondylitis

The Ayurvedic name for lumbar spondylitis is Teevar Prishtha Shoola. The disease is associated with lumbar region of spinal cord. The onset of the disease is a very gradual process. Several diseases like Spondylosis can even go to the extent of compromising the structural reliability of the spine, which in turn affects multiple joints.
